Pulsar in The Noble Qur'an

Bismillah hir-Rahman nir-Raheem
[ In the name of God , The Most Gracious , The Most Merciful ]

One of the fields of science which attracts almost everyone in today's age is cosmology. As man has started exploring the space it has given hope to a wide range of possibilities. When we reflect on the size of the sun we see that the size of earth is insignificant compared to the sun, further we see that the size of the sun is insignificant compared to the size of solar system, solar system is insignificant compared to The Milky Way Galaxy and Our Galaxy is insignificant compared to the Universe.By now you may be thinking how insignificant human beings are compared to the Giant Universe but still man has the courage to reject the creator of the Universe and call it a "chance".

God , in the Noble Qur'an clearly shows this fact :

The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.
-Surah Ghafir (40:57)
One of the recent discoveries in the field of cosmology are stars called pulsar which is a condensed form of the word pulsating-star.

Pulsar are highly magnetized, rotating neutron stars that emit a beam of electromagnetic radiation. The radiation can only be observed when the beam of emission is pointing towards the Earth. This is called the lighthouse effect and gives rise to the pulsed nature that gives pulsars their name. Because neutron stars are very dense objects, the rotation period and thus the interval between observed pulses is very regular. For some pulsars, the regularity of pulsation is as precise as an atomic clock.

Neutron Stars form from the stellar core that remains after stars have exploded as supernovae . If the remaining core is between One and Half to Three Solar Masses then it contracts to form a Neutron Star . Neutron Stars are typically only about 10 km. in diameter and consist entirely of Sub-Atomic Particles (Neutrons) .

They rotate rapidly and emit two beams of Radio Waves , which sweep across the sky and are detected as short Pulses. The matter of a Pulsar (Neutron Star) is so dense that it can literally pierce through anything it collides with. It sends pulses of bright electromagnetic radiation.

A neutron star is so dense that one teaspoon (5 milliliters) of its material would have a mass over 5.5×10^12 kg, about 900 times the mass of the Great Pyramid of Giza. The resulting force of gravity is so strong that if an object were to fall from a height of one meter it would only take one microsecond to hit the surface of the neutron star, and would do so at around 2000 kilometers per second, or 7.2 million kilometers per hour.

By now we have got a basic idea about a Pulsar. Now let us read what God said in The Noble
Qur'an more than 1400 years ago :

By the heaven, and At-Tariq (the night-comer, i.e. the bright star);
And what will make you to know what At-Tariq (night-comer) is?
It is the piercing star.
-Surah Tariq (86:1-3)

The word commonly translated in the first verse as night comer , night visitant etc. is At-Tariq which also means Knocker, Hammerer , Striker etc. Here is a screenshot form the Al-Mawrid dictionary of Arabic :

So as it is clear that the word Tariq means Knocker, the word could also mean "to pulsate" like pulses of heart which are heard almost as knocking (lub-dub). Actually the word knocker has its own significance, it is shown in the fact that the radio waves sent from the Pulsars are actually heard as knockings. Let's see the Videos below showing some Pulsar sounds :

By now answer to the question "Why God used the word Knocker?" is clear because Pulsars do sound like somebody is knocking.

Now in the second verse God asks a question "And what will make you to know what At-Tariq (Pulsar) is?" This question is asked referring to the enormous density of the matter on the Pulsar because God himself replies to the question in the third verse saying "It is the piercing star."

The word translated as piercing in the third verse is "Tahkib" which means piercing, penetrating , drilling etc. and it clearly refers to the matter of the Pulsar which has the power of literally piercing through anything it collides with because one teaspoon (5 milliliters) of its material would have a mass over 5.5×10^12 kg.

So we conclude from the above verses that :
  • It  Knocks (or Pulsates).
  • It can pierce through.
  • It is a star.
As we can see what we have discovered recently (November 28, 1967) was mentioned clearly in The Noble Qur'an more than 1400 years ago. This is one of the sign (miracle) of The Noble Qur'an as God promises in the Noble Qur'an :

We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their ownselves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Quran) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things?
-Surah Fussilat (41:53)
